If you are taking third-party funding or insurance for a legal claim, the funder will often require you to take independent legal advice before signing. A solicitor explains how much of any award you may give up, your obligations and your rights, and signs the certificate the funder needs.

Litigation funding is where a third party pays some or all of the costs of a legal claim in return for a share of any money recovered. It is often combined with after-the-event (ATE) insurance, which covers the risk of paying the other side’s costs if the claim fails.
Funding agreements set out the funder’s return, how recoveries are shared, and the circumstances in which funding can be withdrawn.
Funders and insurers want to be sure that claimants understand the agreement and have entered it freely, to reduce the risk of later challenge. Many therefore require the claimant to receive advice from a solicitor who is independent of the funder and of the solicitors running the claim.

Speak to your solicitor
An SRA-regulated solicitor explains the risks in plain English, by video or in person in London.
Certificate sent to your funder
Your signed certificate is sent to your funder or solicitors, usually the same day.
Yes. Most lenders accept advice given by video call, so you can usually be advised from home. If your lender insists on a face-to-face meeting, that can be arranged in London instead.
You don't need one nearby. Our SRA-regulated solicitors advise by video call wherever you are in England and Wales, often the same day, and video advice is accepted in most cases. If you need to meet face to face, appointments are available at the solicitor's office in London.
Funders usually want the advice to come from a solicitor who is independent of the claim and the funder, so it focuses on your interests.
Often the same day. Once your solicitor has your documents and has advised you, the signed certificate is usually sent to your lender, broker or conveyancer the same day.
Independent legal advice starts from {price} per person. Your solicitor confirms the fixed fee on your free consultation, before any work starts.
